Kinder in landesüblicher Tracht beim Gaufest 2003

Culture and Tradition are very important for the people of Berchtesgaden. From a very young age children already actively join local folklore clubs.

Germany’s only national park in a high mountain range, the Alpen Nationalpark Berchtesgaden is of unique beauty and its diverse nature has a very relaxing effect on the visitor.

Alpennationalpark Berchtesgaden

From Hagen-Mountains via the Königssee to the alpine pastures of the Reiteralm – here you can find a magical section of the Alps in and around Berchtesgaden.
Rare plants, marmots, mountain goats and ibex take their refuge in the national park. With a little bit of luck you might see a golden eagle cruise through the air up above.
At first hand you can learn from nature and see how the circle of life continues in the alps. In the summer months guided walks are offered by the park management almost on a daily basis, all with different topical focus.

Each year on St. Bartholomew’s Day a pilgrimage takes place from Maria Alm (over the Austrian border) to St. Bartholomew’s church on Königssee. In recent years there have been up to 2000 people making this pilgrimage. The tradition of the pilgrimage is centuries old. A tragedy happened in 1688 when 70 pilgrims failed to scale the Falkensteiner rock face and they all fell to their death.

Another rural tradition at harvest time is annual the ‘Almabtrieb’, a ceremonial driving down of the cattle from the mountain pastures to the valley in the autumn. The animals get decorated with flowers, branches from pine trees, ribbons and mirrors. The most spectacular Almabtrieb is probably the one on Obersee in Berchtesgaden, where the cattle are brought across the Königssee by boat.
